Hello everyone and welcome back! Today I am sharing with you all a drama that I have been checking out since it being posted on Youtube. It is the highly anticipated “General and I” starring Wallace Chung and Angelababy as the leads. So far, I’m fairly impressed with the drama (although I’ve rolled my eyes a couple of times -___-)
Anyway, let’s jump right into it.

Credit: Dramafever
Name: General and I / A Lonesome Fragrance Waiting to Be Appreciated (孤芳不自賞)
Estimated number of episodes: 62
Genre: Historical, Romance
Broadcasting dates: January 2nd 2017 to February 10th 2017. Airs every day. Schedule: Sun-Thu: 2 episodes; Fri-Sat: 1 episode
Synopsis (borrowed from Drama Panda):
The four nations Jin, Yan, Liang and Qin are in a state of relentless war. Chu Bei Jie (Wallace Chung), cousin to the King of Jin, is a courageous general who leads his country into a position of power against the remaining kingdoms.
During a fight between Jin and Yan, Jing An Wang and his family fall to a conspiracy leaving He Xia (Sean Sun) and Bai Pin Ting (Angelababy) to fend for themselves. Chu Bei Jie rescues Bai Pin Ting by chance igniting the beginning of a complicated romance, where both are torn between loyalty to their kingdoms and their love for each other.
First Impressions on Ep 1 – 6
(Note: I’m looking at the first 6 episodes for this because the drama is a lengthy one)
As per usual, I will outline this in list form, and if it appeals to you then go right ahead and check it out.
1. There is a lot of action
When I mean a lot, I mean A LOT! It isn’t a very heavy action-packed opening compared to others per say, but afterwards both of our male leads are constantly found in a pickle fighting an unfair 20-1 battle (although they do tend to rein supreme). So, if you are someone who won’t get bored of regular sword fights, then this is indeed the choice for you!
2. Wallace Chung
…Does much need to be said here? Sadly, Angelababy doesn’t have as much chemistry yet with our male lead, but she is trying. I’m just staying optimistic that her chemistry with Wallace will eventually build up because her as a character is really really interesting. I do have to give it to Angelababy though, she can certainly play a cool-headed character who has a fiery gaze when she is strategising or scheming for an escape. Wallace has no trouble holding his own, and Sean likewise does a great job with his character too. So, if you usually really depend on a strong female lead that can hold her own on-screen, maybe give second thoughts on this one.
3. The romance plays on insta-love
I don’t think there’s much to hide, and I wouldn’t consider this as a major spoiler (but apologies if you never knew). Our Bei Jie is instantly attracted to Ping Ting, and claims her as his…the moment he sees her (which is around ep 2???) And the romance is quite one-sided for a little while, although it’s clear that Ping Ting is quite affected by him too. It’s just…they advanced very very quickly. I won’t shar3e too much, but just know that attraction is almost immediate, which was quite shocking for me since I was well aware that this drama has 50+ episodes to go. So, I guess if you need time to see a relationship, then pass.
I personally also found his attraction a little hard to fathom, but they do have a backstory (which is quite touching) that explains his attraction to her somewhat. Indeed, the romance side of this all might be a hit or miss for everyone I’d say. If there was more chemistry, perhaps their romance would be easier to but as of now, I’m more interesting in how this one woman’s knowledge plays in the whole political side of things.
4. The political story is there
And all of the characters are truly affected and intertwined by it all. The plot overall is quite complex, which is indeed a plus. I’m glad that the story doesn’t simply focus on the romance (I guess since there’ plenty of time to do that) and that it is truly unfolding and revealing to us who are indeed the villains of this story. And so, if you aren’t a fan of political drama, then don’t try with this as I can guarantee that it will just build as the drama progresses. However, I personally have high hopes with this one, and believe that this does have potential.
The true question: will I continue watching this drama, or not? And, do I recommend this?
As of right now, would I say you should all jump on the bandwagon to check this out? Hmm to be honest, I’d say give the drama another week or so to allow the plot and romance to thicken (and make others tell you whether it’s worth the time). I personally am going to catch up and watch to every couple of days or so since they come out every day (and so that I can marathon a handful at a time xD). The only heads-up I’ll give as of now is that it is quite addicting (at least to me) and so if you wanna have a go, then go right ahead and let me know what you think about it. I believe this has potential.
Thank you all so much for checking this post out, and I really hope that this one goes well. I haven’t read the book but seeing as to how this drama is going, I’m even considering on reading it. I might consider it after the drama is done in order to spoil myself of anything lol. Anyway, thank you for sticking around and I’ll talk to you all very soon! Wishing you all a lovely day/evening!

Hi, thanks for all your reviews. Definitely helping me in deciding which to binge-watch or not. Hehe.
Btw, about this drama particularly.. I am currently reading its novel..and.. I can tell you… It is just too addictive to even stop reading for a meal.
Agreed with you, the romanticism is too ‘pushy’ to us viewers.
In novel, as much as I get the butterflies in my stomach for the part (chapter 6,7,8)… The rest of it seems… Too cheesy if i may say.
For a famous general & war strategist, how could he fell soooo hard for a woman (though she was that interesting and knowledgable) almost neglecting his role and abandoning the kingdom?
Well, I am still reading (still early to decide) And definitely will watch the drama too. Most probably cant help comparing and relating both.
Hahaha.
I’m giving myself a chance of this.
Anyway, keep up the effort and the passion.
Thanks and till then.

Hi nftia82, thank you so much for sharing! Damn, now I’m really tempted to check out the novel. And yes, isn’t it silly how a war general just fell for a woman with the snap of his fingers? I mean, there’s no crime in living someone, but neglecting his kingdom almost seems our of character for someone so loyal to his king and kingdom…
Thank you for your comment, and I might really consider checking out the novel. Thank you again!

Hm, okay, I usually have a hard time really getting into C-Dramas, but this looks SO pretty! I’ll add it to my drama list. 😀
I’ll watch your reviews before jumping in though. I trust you ;D
Cheers!

Isn’t it?! I forgot to mention this but the costuming and setting for this drama is absolutely gorgeous!
And yes, I’ll let you know if it’s worth your time. I’ll probably post up a current trek post later on down the track if I still continue this. Thank you and see you around!

Nobody said so, but what do you say about Whang? He obviously is too young to be characterized as father of that witch. Hmph.
