Returning back to Blogging: 30-Day Asian Drama Challenge – Day 8

Geez, is it just me or are these questions getting harder and harder every day? Here is Day 8’s question:

Worst case of Second Lead Syndrome you’ve experienced.

The worst one???! Uhhhhhhh can I push this a little and give a couple? How about three cases? I just can’t settle with one. And let’s be honest, there are thousands of cases of SLS out there so everyone is bound to write something different for this question.

1. Seung Nyang </3 Wang Yoo (Empress Ki)

I just love this picture of them :3 Credit: Jagged Little Blog

Digging up old wounds is horrible, especially when it comes to this couple. It tore my tiny little heart out when I had come to the realisation that these two could never be together. Despite the love they had for each other, destiny got in the way and pulled these two apart. Empress Ki is one drama where I couldn’t fathom why or how our female lead ended up developing feelings for the other man…how? Wang Yoo was an amazing man who was righteous, loyal and dedicated to achieving justice for all, as well as loving the one woman he truly cared about. I just couldn’t buy Seung Nyang with Ta Hwan, I really couldn’t. Wang Yoo will still be the superior man in my heart (there’s of course TalNyang that never happened too…major disappointment :/)

You can check out my review here where I go into more detail, but this one really destroyed me, simply because I knew which ship I was going to sail with right from the beginning, but the story and writers tried to push me in the other direction.

2. Eun Bi </3 Kang Hyuk (Flower Boy Ramen Shop)

Sigh, another one where the second lead should have gotten the girl. I did find the drama to be alright, but the characterisation of this drama really made it difficult to accept that Chi Soo would end up getting the girl over Gang Hyuk…I mean why oh why? He was so caring and truly understood her, yet she chooses to go with the high school bad boy…I understand that Il Woo is very very tempting…but come on?! You have another perfect guy right there Eun Bi, RIGHT THERE! *clears throat* As you can see…I might have still not been able to get over this one, just yet.

3. Jin Hee </3 Cheon Soo (Emergency Couple)

And finally we have this couple who were never meant to be. As much as I love Jin Hyuk (I’ve watched literally all of his dramas), I really believed that Cheon Soo should have gotten the girl. Ji Hyo and Pil Mo’s chemistry on-screen was right there on display, and I truly shipped it. Sadly enough, he doesn’t have a clear ending as well, which is even more depressing. Sigh, this was indeed a really bad case of SLS for me. If you want to read a little more on it, check out the review I wrote for it a while back.

Now, let me just mend my broken heart for all these pairings that will never be. I’ll see you all tomorrow, hopefully.

Here’s the 30 Day Asian Drama Challenge if you are interested in joining!  I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s answers to these questions.

  1. I actually had to stop watching Flower Boy Ramyun Shop because the second lead syndrome was too painful! He was SO PERFECT.
