Hey everyone and I am back once again to share with you what I’m finding this week in the lovely world of Kpop!
This week, while scrolling through my endless content-filled Youtube subscription list, I came across the video linked below. Without much knowledge about the singer, I chose to watch the video since I recognised the actor in the MV, Daniel Choi.
And boy, was I not ready for what I was about to discover!
Wanna know what I thought about it? Then please keep reading!
Alright, this review is going to be split up; talking about both the song and the MV itself, which will undeniable convince you that this is probably the best song of the year so far.
So, Wax is finally back after M.I.A for 5 years with the song “Coin Laundry (사랑한 적도 없는)”, or ‘Never Loved’ as translated in English. It is a song that vocalises the need to erase the painful memories and scars of an emotional breakup, much like how a coin laundry machine is capable of washing away anything. The English translations for the song are below, which were found at this Pop!gasa blog post:
I hope a cup of tears can erase the painful breakup stains
Your thick scent, your thick traces
I hope it all disappearsWipe clean the memories that are countless like the stars
Like new clothesI want to go back to the start
When I didn’t know you
The day I first met you
I want to avoid that coincidenceWe’ve never met, we’ve never loved
We’re farther apart than strangersI hope even if we meet, we won’t recognize each other
That we can just go our own way
Don’t turn around, don’t talk to me
Just leave my face as a question markWe did all we could
There’s no unfinished business between us
Like the seasonsI want to go back to the start
When I didn’t know you
The day I first met you
I want to avoid that coincidenceI want to get out of this place
Tears welling up in this coin laundry
Wax (왁스) is well known for singing songs in relation to women and their lives, and since this song was sung in the female’s perspective, it’s no wonder that Wax has once again touched hundreds and thousands of women through her powerful and harmonic melodies. With the acoustic guitar sounds and soft piano chords, Wax’s delicate voice becomes a ballad that flows through you and washes you away with her passionate and emotional vocals. It sounds saddening, regardless of whether or not you understand what she is singing. That, my people, is skill and talent right there. I’m an absolute sucker for ballads, which is probably why I’ve been playing this song nonstop. Bye-bye “Something”, hello~~ “Coin Laundry”!
Now, onto the MV. The cinematography in the MV is absolutely gorgeous; at times it is crisp and so detailed, and at other times it blurs slightly, placing pure focus on a particular person or couple moment. Whoever filmed this was an absolute genius (did you possibly work with the people who did “That Winter the Wind Blows”?? You sneaky you… ^_^)
The only two people seen in the MV is currently-trending popular actor Choi Daniel and supermodel Son Soo Hyun, who both have worked together in the past for Brown Eyed Soul’s “Love Ballad” MV, which was sweet, romantic and memorable. I’ll have the MV linked below for anyone who is interested ^^~ Both characters in the MV act their heart out, which conclusively results in a powerful performance from both personnels. Their acting seems real and raw – some scenes seemingly genuine and pure, while others made the audience reflect the emotions that both individuals felt in this beautiful yet fracturing relationship.

And just to rub it in, we get the typical case of juxtaposition. The innocent, clueless lovesick female…
Choi Daniel has been an actor that has been in the acting business for a while now, but only recently gained much notice through the popular high school drama “School 2013” and the short MBC drama special “Waiting For Love” alongside the Queen of Kpop BoA. Clearly, through this MV, his talent wasn’t put to waste as his emotional acting skill were clearly felt by literally everyone (bring on the crying fangirls *clap-clap!*)
Son Soo Hyun in particular though, should be commemorated for her efforts here. Clearly, she knew what she was doing and despite her profession being technically a model, no one could tell with her amazing acting skills in this MV. Each scene seemed so natural and real, that no one would have questioned whether or not these were due to her experiences or whatever. Good job, unni!
Overall, this MV is SUPER SPECIAL AWESOME! It looks great, sounds amazing and it is currently the song I’ve been listening to NON-STOP! Anyone who has time to spare should definitely check out this song and music video!
Alright, that is all for today! I’m going to go now and start watching “My Love From Another Star“. Yes, I’m late once again to jump on the bandwagon but hey, better late than ever, right? HAHAHA…I should really stop doing this. Also, been eyeing on Song Ji Hyo and Choi Jin Hyuk’s new drama “Emergency Couple“, which is releasing soon!! You don’t understand HOW LONG I have been waiting to see Jin Hyuk oppa in a rom-com! Probably ever since “Daddy’s Girl” in 2010…CAN’T WAIT!!
Okay okay, it’s time to go! I’ll catch up with you guys soon (hopefully a review of a drama, or an anime…even a movie maybe; who knows anymore?!)
❤ Yami Hyunnie ^^~
P.S. Below is the MV for “Love Ballad“. I recommend you guys check it out; the song is silky-soft and smooth too ^^
