Lovely to see them back together once again…prepare the waterworks people!
So, as the title has pretty much summed up the feels that I’m feeling at the moment, somehow this has become a thing now. And I ask myself, “How the hell did this happen?! Have I really been excluded from my own Chinese pop culture that long now?” And the only answer I can come up with is yes. Yes I have.
So, after searching around the internet (as per usual) to find some new Chinese dramas to watch (cause I just have nothing better to do), I came across another blogger’s site and found that she had kindly subbed the song played within the MV linked below. And what I say next is not a joke. For literally one minute, I was wondering why the hell this video had written the title of the drama wrong. It wasn’t until later that I realised that步步惊情 (Bu Bu Jing Qing) is actually the anticipated sequel to the 2011 Chinese drama 步步惊心 (Bu Bu Jing Xin), and that the story between Ruo Xi and the 4th Prince will continue in the present era…HOLY FUTURE SONS OF SHISUS, WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?
I am freaking out with both excitement and absolute embarrassment. Excitement because I can’t believe that they would continue the actual series (though with that ending…yep, people were bound to complain). Embarrassment because they’ve finished filming already; months ago. It only felt even worse when I asked my mum about it, and she replies “Yeah, it should have finished filming months ago”. I run back to my laptop and fancy enough, the wiki page says it finished filming in June 2013…how the hell did I not hear this???
However, what has really got to me is the whole fact that 步步惊心, almost 2 years on, can still affect me so. The love story between Ruo Xi and the 4th Prince is a story which still brings me heartache and sorrow simply through the thought of them, and now these evil directors will continue to throw my heart in a spin with a sequel? SERIOUSLY!!…I’ll still watch it regardless LOL
I seriously can not wait for this to be released, and from what I’m seeing within that MV above, BRING FORTH THE WATERWORKS! Thanks for reading guys, and honestly, did you guys know that this happened? No one told me anything, and I ended up finding out by myself anyways! *Sigh* So delayed…

I’m currently watching the first series and I like it very much, but I’m not sure whether I should watch the second one too. I read comments which said it’s disappointing, spoiling and not at the same level as series 1. What’s your opinion?

Hi again Chiyako, thank you for your comment! Sadly, due to my lack in time management skills, I haven’t been able to finish watching this series. However, judging from the first handful of episodes that I’ve seen so far, this series is definitely not as amazing as the first one is, mainly because there is not much connection between the two seasons. But this is only my opinion from just the first 5-6 episodes.
I would definitely suggest that you finish watching the first series first, and then maybe go ahead and watch the first couple of episodes. If you like it, then go ahead. If not, then don’t bother with the series at all. I personally believe that it probably cannot match to the first series, simply because apart from the use of the same main leads within the drama, it does not tell a compelling story much like the first one. It follows an entirely different story between a whole bunch of different characters. Probably the whole idea that both dramas are connected in same way, has ruined my ability to view this drama as a drama itself, rather than a spin-off of the original.
But anyway, excuse the terribly lengthy and slightly irrelevant reply. just make sure to finish the first drama before heading along to the next one. Oh, and avoid spoilers at all costs, trust me! If you end up watching the second one, let me know how you found it! I’ll try re-attempting to watch it later once all my exams are complete! Thanks again Chiyako, and hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks for your reply, Yami Hyunnie. I’ll definitely finish the first series, and I’m almost sure I’ll watch the second one, but probably after a few months to disconnect it from the first series. Then I’ll tell you my opinion. 😉

Hello Yami Hyunnie. After almost two years, I’ve finally watched Scarlet Heart 2. I ended it just yesterday evening. As promised, here I am sharing my opinion. Firstly, I’ll say I’ve watched the 39-episode version, aka the uncensored one, even though subtitles were almost terrible in grammar and timing. But, regardless… I made it!
The first half is bit stagnant, imo, it’s not clear where they are aiming to go. I kept waiting for someone major to happen. Also, Zhang Xiao and Yin Zheng are almost not introduced, since they were already in the first series and therefore they are supposed to have the same characteristics of their historical aliases, or to directly be them in a modern setting. This is to say that YZ can be as cruel as emperor Yongzheng, which is a bit disconcerting in a modern series and since he’s supposed to be the hero, but almost acts as the villain of them all.
It gets much more interesting when Lan Lan disappears and ZX and YZ begin to know each other. In this arc, there’s my favourite moment, which is the trip to the temple to seek for Lan Lan. Moreover, ZX finally regains her memories. But I have to say that things start going from dramatic to even more dramatic (a lot of crying…), till the last arc. I’ll avoid spoilers as much as possibile.
The last arc is a bit heavy in terms of content because drama reaches its highest peak. Sihan becomes a psychopath (after a series of circumstances… I had had enough of uncle Chenggui the schemer king, though…) and does a lot of bad things.
The last episode is botched. It’s mainly composed of flashbacks and time is wasted showing alternate endings (one more absurd than the other… come on! Were they really taking those kind of endings in consideration?). The real ending lasts a minute that, guess what?, was already shown in the opening sequence. Then flashbacks of the epic love start playing till the closing song.
It’s not a bad series in itself, but consider it’s only my second (and last) Chinese drama, so my judgement could be a bit limited. If one looks for a true sequel, it’s disappointing: there are abundant references to the first series in the first 3-4 episodes, then ZX loses her memories and, even when she regains them, the first series gets forgotten.
All in all, it was a pleasant vision that didn’t bore me.

Haha I’ve still yet to properly finish this series, but after reading your opinions on it, I feel determined to finish it now. I believe it is time I seek closure on this drama once and for all.
Thank you for not going into too much detail to avoid spoilers; I will try my best to finish this one and reply to you back how I found it. I guess the whole idea that it was a sequel without a majority of the cast returning was a turnoff for me.
And oh gosh, don’t you just hate those endings filled with flashbacks rather than comprehensive closure? It just always feel half-hearted…

Yes, yes, I hate endings filled of flashbacks! I’ll be looking forward to your opinion on Scarlet Heart 2.
I’m currently watching “Warrior Baek Dong-soo”. I have 3 episodes left, but I’ve been finding it rather boring. However the chemistry between Ji Chang-wook and Yoo Seung-ho is great! 😉
I’m also watching SBS new family drama “Our Gap-soon” because I love the main couple, and I’m enjoying it despite low ratings.
